First Generation

1. George BOSHER 1 [1398] was born in 1751 (approx.) in Mortimer Nr Reading. 2 He married Susannah GILLENS [1399] on 27 April 1772 in Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire, England. 3 He died on 27 October 1816.

 

Last night we found out that George Bosher 1751 was born at Mortimer Nr Reading

(Peggy Stoner - 19 December 2006).

 

I do not know if I have given you the following information or not or whether it is waiting to be incorporated. So I will give it again just to make sure.

George Bosher was born about 1751 and died on the 27th October 1816. Susannah Gillens his wife was born around 1750.The birth dates I have for the children are in fact Christening dates.

1) William Bosher 21st January 1773.

The name now changes to Bosier.

2) John Bosier 2nd April 1775. He died before 1779.

3) Ann Bosier 20th April 1777

They then had another son called John.

4) John Bosier 18th April 1779

5) Francis Bosier 21st April 1782

6) Harriet Bosier 17th May 1783

7) Lucy Bosier 21st December 1783

8) Alexander Bosier 27th August 1786.

17. Lucy BOSIER [1950], daughter of John BOSIER [1396] and Mary CLIFFORD [1397], was christened on 2 April 1809 in Winkfield. She married Issac PARKER [1951] on 3 July 1831 in Winkfield. She died on 23 February 1843.

 

Lucy Bozier was born before the 2nd April 1809 at Winkfield. She was the daughter of John Bosier and Mary Clifford. She married Issac Parker on the 3rd July 1831 at Winkfield. She died in the Jan/ Feb/ Mar qtr. of 1843 . The registration district was Easthampstead, in Berkshire. Vol.6 p 121.

The obtained certificate reveals that she actually died on the 23rd February 1843. She was 34 years old. She was the wife of Issac Parker, a labourer. The cause of death was consumption. Easthampstead is part of Bracknell Forest District.

She had 4 children, Catherine Parker, George Francis Parker,Mary Parker and Susannah Parker.

I have been concentrating on Susannah.

She was christened on the 1st December 1839.

She married Thomas Sturgess on the 8th May 1865.

She died in 1905 and Thomas died in 1877.

They had the following children, Thomas Sturgess, Selwyn Sturgess, James Sturgess and Emma Sturgess.

On the 1871 census Susannah was the wife of Thomas, born in Winkfield and living in Egham, Surrey. She was aged 31 and Thomas was aged 33. They had 2 children Thomas Sturgess aged 3 and Selwyn aged 1.

On the 1881 census, Susannah was aged 41 and Head of the family. She was living at 1, Wakefield Mews Stables with rooms over and she was a widow. Her occupation was that of a needlewoman. The registration district was Grays Inn Lane. She had the following people living with her. Thomas aged 13, Selwyn aged 11, James aged 9, Emma aged 7 and a child called John Constant aged 1. He was a nurse child. Further investigation showed that the area was St. Pancras, Marylebone.

On the 1891 census Susannah was 51 and head of the family. The civil Parish was St. Andrew and St. George, Holy Trinity , Holborn, London, sub-registration district St. George the Martyr. She was now just called Susan. She had her son James living with her and he was aged 19. She was sharing a house at 12, Hillman Street.

25. Ann Elizabeth BOZIER 4 [1429], daughter of John BOSIER [1427] and Sarah MILLS [1428], married John Francis PUTT [1430] on 17 June 1856 in Church of St. John in the District of St. John's Deptford in the County of Kent.

 

Ann Elizabeth Bozier married John Francis Putt on the 17th June 1856. The marriage took place at the Church of St. John in the District of St. John's Deptford in the County of Kent. Both were of full age. He was a bachelor and she was a spinster. He was a sailor living at 12,Ticenty Street. She was living at no. 13. His father was Phillip Putt a Boat Maker. Her father was John Bozier, a labourer. The witnesses were George and Eliza Wright. The Registration District was Greenwich.

He died on 18 February 1882 in 1 Hughes Fields. 4

 

John Francis Bozier married Eliza Emma Beaton on 27th March 1853.He was of full age but she was a minor. He was a bachelor and she was a spinster. The marriage took place at The Parish Church in the Parish of St. Paul's Deptford in the County of Kent and Sussex. John was a labourer and they both lived in the parish. John's father was also JohnBozier and was a labourer. Eliza's father, Charles Beaton, was a Mariner. The witnesses were George Wright and Eliza Bozier. The registration district was Greenwich. He married again in 1878. John died on the 18th February 1882 at 1 Hughes Fields. He was 51 years old and had been a labourer. The cause of death was Phthesis, exhaustion. The informant was Rosina Bozier, widow of the deceased, present at the death. She registered the death by making her mark on the 21st February 1882. She lived at the same address. The registration district was Greenwich, death in the sub-district of St. Nicholas, Deptford in the County of Kent.

28. James Matthew BOZIER [1438], son of John BOSIER [1427] and Sarah MILLS [1428], was born in 1836 (approx.). He died on 5 July 1886.

 

1)Henry John Bozier (5th child of the marriage)

Henry was born on the 10th March 1869 at 7, Albert Terrace, George Street, Deptford. Gro 1869 Apr/May/Jun Greenich 1d 667.

He married Emma Maria Palmer on the 8th July 1895 at St. Johns Church Deptford. Henry was a 26 year old bachelor and a cheesemonger. He lived at 51, Boyson Road, Camberwell. Emma was a 25 year old spinster. She lived at 43, Ravensbourne Street. Her father was Henry Palmer, a plumber. Registration was Greenwich.

Henry died in June 1949 at Lambeth. Emma died in 1958

.

They had 3 children, Dorothy Emma Bozier, May Elizabeth Bozier and Leslie Percival Bozier.

1a)Dorothy Emma Bozier was born on the 26th November 1896 at 51, Boyson Road, Walworth.

She married Reginald Hunt in 1919.

1b)May Elizabeth Bozier was born 6th June 1898.

She married Alfred Percival Dale (also descended from the Boziers. They both had the same grandfather, James Bozier 1836.) They married on the 26th March 1921. They had one son Brian Bozier Dale born the 24th September 1923.

1c)Leslie Henry Bozier was born on the 15th June 1900 at 23b, Southampton Street, Camberwell.He married Alice Winifred Pryke in 1931. She had been born about 1909. Leslie died in 1982. They had one child Michael John Leslie Bozier born 25th March 1936.(have not been able to find any more.)

Leslie made a second marriage to Beryl E Troward in1961.

Thomas STURGESS [1956] was born in 1838 (approx.) in Ludgershall, Wiltshire. He died in 1877.

 

Susannah's Husband was Thomas Sturgess.

On the descendents of George Bosher it does not say when Thomas was born.

However I have managed to trace him on the 1861 census and this shows that he was born around 1838. He was the son of Selwyn, (spelt Silwin) and Elizabeth Sturgess and had been born at Ludgershall, Wiltshire. The civil Parish was Appleshaw, in Hampshire. The registration district was Andover. At the time he was 23. His father was 56 and his mother was 57. He had a brother Edward aged 18, a sister Elizabeth aged 16, and a brother Albert aged 14. His sister Elizabeth was still a scholar but the rest of the family were bricklayers. The actual address is too feint to read. On the 1881 census Thomas' parents were living alone. It does reveal that Thomas's father was also born at Ludershall, Wiltshire in 1805.

Thomas Sturgess the son of Susannah and Thomas.

The 1871 census states that he was born about 1868 at Bracknell, Berkshire. He was living with his family ay Daisy Cottage, Blayes Lane, Egham. He was aged 3. The sub-registration district was Windsor.

The 1881 census says that Thomas was 13. He was living at 1, Wakefield Mews with Rooms over. He was a Grocers Boy.

Selwyn Sturgess the 2nd son of Susannah and Thomas.

I have the GRO details for his birth. Selwyn Sturgess 1869 Apr/May/ Jun qtr. Clerkenwell, London Middlesex. vol. 1b p631.

The 1871 census says that he was born about 1870 in Clerkenwell. He was living with his parents at Egham, Surrey aged 1. The registration district was Windsor.

The 1881 census says that he was aged 11 and had been born at Pentonville Hill, Middlesex. He was living at 1, Wakefield Mews Stables with Rooms over and was a scholar.

I have the GRO details for his marriage. Selwyn Sturgess 1890 Oct/ Nov/ Dec. Pancras(1837-1901) London , Middlesex. Vol. 1b p 45

The 1991 census says that he was 31 , born about 1870 and was head of the family. He had a wife called Selma and they were living at St. Marks Islington, sub-registration district Upper Hollaway. There were 7 people living at the address. Selwyn was 31, his wife Selma was 31 and his brother - in - law Victor H Munn was 30. They had the following children, Ethel, Selma, Selwyn and Emma. Selma his wife had been born in Clerkenwell. Her maiden name was Munn. Her brother Victor H Munn

had been born about 1871 also at Islington.

Their daughter Ethel Sturgess was born about 1892 at Islington.

Their daughter was born about 1894 at Islington.

Their son Selwyn was born about 1896 at Islington. I also have the GRO details for his birth, Selwyn Sturgess 1895 Apr/ May/ Jun Islington Greater London vol. 1b p336.

Their daughter Emma was 8 months on the 1901 census. She too had been born at Islington.

James Sturgess the 3rd son of Susannah and Thomas.

On the 1881 census he was aged 9 and had been born about 1872 at Englefield Green, Surrey. He was living at 1, Wakefield Mews with Rooms Over.

On the 1891 census he was living with his mother at Holborn. He was a porter and his mother was a charwoman.

Emma Sturgess daughter of Susannah and Thomas.

I have the GRO INDEX for her. Emma Sturgess 1874 Apr/ May/Jun qtr. Windsor, Berkshire vol. 2c p420.

On the 1881 census she was 7 years old and had been born at Englefield Green, Surrey. She was living at Wakefield Mews Stables with Rooms Over. She was a scholar.

On the 1891 census Emma was 17. She was a servant living at Erith, Kent. The registration district was Dartford. She was living with the following people:-

William Adams aged 21, Lizzie Layton aged 51, Fred Palmer aged 28, John Palmer aged 18, Lizzie Palmer aged 24, William Palmer aged 21,and Winifred Palmer aged 1 month.

He was christened on 18 October 1835. 6 He married Elizabeth ALLEN [1304] on 10 February 1856 in The Baptist meeting house, Wokingham. 7 He appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Staplefield, Cuckfild, Sussex. 8 The address was: Dorcas Cotages (schedule 22). On 3 April 1881 he was a Gamekeeper in Staplefield. 8 He died on 19 March 1897 in Union Workhouse, Cuckfield, Sussex. 9

 

Francis John Bozier was born before the 18th Oct 1835 when he was christened. Francis married Elizabeth Allen on the 10th Feb 1856 at the Baptist Church Wokingham Barks. He was 20 year old bachelor and a labourer . He lived at Langborough Wokingham. His father was William Bozier a blacksmith. The surmane at that time was spelt Boshier. Francis was unable to read and write his wife was a 19 year spinster from Down Street Wokingham. She was able to read and write. They shared their wedding with Elizabeth's brother William and his bride Hannah. We have a copy of the marriage certificate. We have been in contact with Meg Goswell from the Baptist Church. She has supplied us with photo copy of a painting of the Church as it was in those times. They had the following children Emily about 1859 in Wokingham, Elizabeth about 1867 Wokingham, William about Sep 1868 Wokingham. They then moved to Sussex and had Francis 17th April 1871 Ardingly. Rebekah was born in June 1874 Ardingly. The family then moved to Woodlands Cottage Nymans Gardens Handcross where Ellen was born in March 1877 and John in 1879. They then moved to Staplefield Common Dorca Cottages ( we have a photo of Woodlands Cottage. It has now been restored and is a National Trust Holiday Cottage. We also have a photo of the old piggery and smoakhouse that is still behind the cottage.) Francis then lived at the Union Workhouse Cuckfield where he died on the 19th March 1897 aged 63 years. He had been a gamekeeper but finished his days as a general labourer for Cuckfield Rural Council. Cuckfield workhouse became Cuckfield Hospital and the 1990/91 was closed and converted into flats.

Elizabeth ALLEN [1304], daughter of Joshua ALLEN ( - ) [1361] and Elizabeth BRAY ( - ) [1362], was born in Uxbridge, Middlesex. She appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Staplefield. 8 The address was: Dorcas Cotages (schedule 22).

 

Some info on Elizabeth Bozier nee Allen ( Emliy's mum ) she was one of eight children born too Joshua & Elizabeth Allen. Joshua married Elizabeth Bray on the 14th May 1826. The family lived at Buckin Inams Farm Wokingham. Her father was a farmer of 3 acres of land and a Bone Crusher. Elizabeth's mother died of consumption when she was 7 and her younger brother was 2. One of her older brothers was called William and another called Joshua.

I found him on the 1881 census. He was aged 10, the son of George and Charlotte J. He was born in Wokingham. The civil parish was Winnersh. The Street address was Reading Road, Hurst. He was a scholar. The sub-registration district was Wargrave. He was living with his mother Charlotte aged 47, father George aged 42 and his brother Herbert George aged 14,

I also found him on the 1901 census. He was aged 29, born about 1872. He was a boarder. He had been born at Wokenham. The civil parish was Woolich, Ecclesiastical Parish, St. John the Evangelist North Woolich. The head of the family was Henry J Criddle aged 28. He had a wife called Charlotte A Criddle aged 30. There was also a John G Burtenshaw, aged 25.

I also know that he married Agnes Waters.

He had 2 children, Lavenia Maria Bozier and Clifford George Bozier.

Alma Jane Bozier, their 4th child, was born on the 3rd January 1875 at Old House Farm, Barkham. Her father was George Bozier, a Shepherd. Her mother was Charlotte Bozier formerly Allen. GRO Details Alma Jane Bozier 1875 Jan/ Feb/ Mar Wokingham 2c 377.

I found her on the 1881 census. She was aged 6, born about 1875. She was the sister-in-law. She had been born at Wokingham. The civil parish was Winkfield. The Street Address was Broad Lane. She was a scholar. The registration district was Easthamstead, sub-registration Bracknell. Other people on the sheet were her brother-in-law Henry Brewer aged 28, her sister Blanch Brewer aged 22 and her niece Emily C Brewer aged 1.

In 1901 when Alma was 26 she gave birth to a baby girl, Alice Bozier, about March time.

I found Alice on the 1901 census. She was aged 1 month. She was a pauper. She had been born in Hambledon, Surrey. The parish was Hambledon St. Peter. The registration district was Hambledon, sub-registration district Witley. She was living at the Union Workhouse.

I obtained a list of the other inmates at that time and her mother Alma was not among them.

I then found a map of Hambledon Union Workhouse showing the layout. I also found a photo of the workhouse taken in 1895.

On the 1881 census He was aged 30 and had been born about 1851. He was head of the family. His spouse's name was Ellen. It says that he was born at Ascot, Berks. The civil Parish was St. Lawrence, Berks. The street address was 5, Yield Hall Place. His occupation was a lawyer.( I think that this is a mistake because on his children's birth certificates it says that he was a wood sawyer) The registration district was Reading, sub-registration district St. Lawrence.It listed the family as Annie aged 5, Ellen aged 28, Rebecca aged 3 , Thomas aged 30 and William no age given.

On the 1901 census Thomas is aged 51. Born about 1850. He was head of the family. His spouse was Ellen. It now says that he was born in Reading. The civil parish was St. Giles. Registration Reading, sub-registration district was St. Giles. The family were listed as follows. Ellen Bozier 48, Joseph 16, Kate 18, Maggie 14, Thomas 51. William 20 and Ellen's father Joseph Matthew aged 72.

According to the Free BMD BIRTH INDEX Ellen was born Ellen Matthews in 1852. The registration was Oct/ Nov/ Dec quarter. The district was Witney, Berkshire.

Her father was a sawyer and her mother a dressmaker.They were living at Daudeil Street? ( Very indisdinct). There were no other children at that time. They shared the accomodation with another family.

g)Sarah Ann Rebecca Bozier was born on the 18th February 1869 at 12, New Street, Deptford. Her father was John Francis Bozier, a factory labourer. Her mother was Rosina Bozier formerly Threadingham. The family lived at New Street. Rosina registered her daughter's birth by making her mark on the 12th March 1869. The registration district was Greenwich, birth in the sub-district of St. Nicholas Deptford in the County of Kent. Sarah married Nelson Tutt on the 26th April 1886 at The Parish Church in the Parish of St. Lukes Deptford in the County of Kent. Nelson was a 20 year old bachelor and a book binder. Sarah was a 17 year old spinster. He lived at 239, Evelyn Street, Deptford. She lived at 10, Wotton Street, Deptford. His father was James Benjamin Tutt a Wicker, deceased.Her was John Francis Bozier, a labourer. The witnesses were William E Cockle and Selina Bozier, her sister. The registration district was Greenwich.

 

Nelson TUTT [1900] was born in 1866.

 

Re Neson Tutt that married Sarah Ann Rebecca Bozier

I found the Birth Index for him. 1866 Jan/Feb/Mar Greenwich 1d 737

I found him on the 1871 census aged 5. He was living at 21,Browning Place ,Greenwich, His father was J.S .Tutt aged 35. His mother was Louisa Tutt aged 30. He had a brother Willie Tutt aged 3 and a brother Charlie aged 7 months.

I also found him on the 1881 census aged 15. It now says that his father was James. He had left scool but was unemployed. There was now 3 more children, Louisa aged 7, Maud aged 4 and a baby Laura.

I then found him on the 1891 census aged 25. He was now married to Sarah Ann Rebecca Bozier and living at 69 Norman Road, Greenwich. Sarah was 21 and he had a nother brother Ernest aged 7 living with them. Nelson was a book forwarder and Sarah was a book folder.

On the 1901 census Nelson was aged 35. He and Sarah had moved to 7, Kings Street, Broadwater, Worthing. They did not have children. He was a labourer and she was a laundress.

As you know she married Thomas Veal.

I found her on the 1901 census in her married name of Selina Veal.

She was aged 29 and it says that she was born about 1872. Thomas was head of the family aged 31. They were living at 27, Alma Road, Bermondsey. There were no children. He was a leather dresser.

2)George William Bozier ( 6th child of the marriage)

George was born on the 13th June 1871at george Sreet, Deptford. He married Elizabeth Alice Langridge on the 1st October 1904 at Lewisham.He died on the 13th April at Dartford. Elizabeth Alice had been born about 1878 and died on the 27th February 1962. They had one known son, George Alfred Bozier.

1a) George Alfred Bozier was born on the 14th March 1908 at Lewisham. He married May Ellen Bond on the 12th May 1935 at The Register Office , Lewisham. He was a pilot officer and died in WW 2. He died on the 11th April 1943. He was buried on the 11th April 1943 at Hirson Communal Cementry, Aisne, France. Probate was given to his widow May Ellen Bozier on the 14th February 1945.

We knew that he married Emma Sturgess but here are a few more details.

First of all, I found his Birth Index. 1871 Apr/May/Jun Pancras (1837-1901) 1b p 50 .

Then I found him on the 1881 census. He was the son of James and Sarah and was born at St. Pancras. He was living at 55, Burton Street and was a scholar. The following were recorded on the census:-

Her father was Francis Bozier, a labourer. The registration district was Cuckfield. On the 1901 census her name had been recorded as Francis the male spelling. She was head of the family and a widow. Her occupation was that of a scrubber, wash? (unreadable) and a Parochial worker. She had a daughter Daisy aged 8 who was a scholar and had been born in Godalming. Frances shared the accommodation at 97, Eardley Road Cottages with another family of 7 people. The civil parish was Streatham. The Municiple Borough was Wandsworth.
