The marriage was solemnised at St. Barnabas' Church, Dulwich, on

Saturday, of Miss Emily Louisa Pennyfather, of 282, Lordship Lane,

and Mr. Colin Bertrand Penfold, only son of Mr. and Mrs. S.B.

Penfold, of 282, Lordship Lane. The service was fully choral.

Given away by Mr. S.B.Penfold, the bride was dressed in white

satin, with veil and orange blossom headdress. Her bouquet was of

pink carnations, which were later sent to the Children's Ward of the

King's College Hospital. Attending the bride were the Misses Joan and Betty Blackwell, who were dressed in pale blue organdie, with headdresses to match. They carried bronze chrysanthemums. The bridegroom's mother wore cinnamon brown. Mr. G.Tiller performed the duties of best man. A reception was held at St. Barnabas' Hall and at 282, Lordship Lane. For the honeymoon journey to Devon the bride wore a green dress with a grey coat and brown accessories.".

Death In Prison Was Natural

A 78-year-old man who had spent most of his life in prison died in Wandsworth Prison from natural causes a jury decided at the inquest on Tuesday.

A verdict of natural causes was returned on Richard Pennyfather, who was serving seven years preventive detention at Wandsworth for larceny.

Michael Gale, the governor of the prison told the coroner that Pennyfather first went to Wandsworth in September 1960 but had been transferred to Parkhurst prison in 1961.

"He came back to Wandsworth on September 7 this year and he was admitted straight into the prison hospital because of his health"

Thomas Walsh, a prison officer, told the coroner that on September 17 he had gone into Pennyfather's room in the hospital and found him dead.

"The room was perfectly in order and there was no signs of anything being wrong." he said. Dr. Geoffrey Allen, a pathologist, said, "His lungs were in terrible condition - there was a small cancer in the right lung and they were slightly waterlogged. "His death was probably due to bronchial pneumonia - the effect of his age," he said. ²

William Penfold was born in Itchingfield, and baptised in that parish on 23rd October 1791. His parents were John and Elizabeth Penfold (nee Sandell).

Prior to 1821 there is no mention of the surname Penfold and the name is not listed in the census of that year for Hartfield.

This is strange, as our William, a widower of Hartfield married Hannah Humphrey a spinster also of the parish on 18th February 1821. This began a Penfold association with the village that lasted throughout the remainder of the century.

Samuel Slade the Rector conducted the ceremony. Thomas Humphrey and Emma Humphrey were present. Nothing is known of William's former wife and it is assumed that they lived outside of the parish when she was alive.

They shared their wedding with Elizabeth's brother William and his bride Hannah. We have a copy of the marriage certificate. We have been in contact with Meg Goswell from the Baptist Church. She has supplied us with photo copy of a painting of the Church as it was in those times. They had the following children Emily about 1859 in Wokingham, Elizabeth about 1867 Wokingham, William about Sep 1868 Wokingham. They then moved to Sussex and had Francis 17th April 1871 Ardingly. Rebekah was born in June 1874 Ardingly. The family then moved to Woodlands Cottage Nymans Gardens Handcross where Ellen was born in March 1877 and John in 1879. They then moved to Staplefield Common Dorca Cottages ( we have a photo of Woodlands Cottage. It has now been restored and is a National Trust Holiday Cottage. We also have a photo of the old piggery and smoakhouse that is still behind the cottage.) Francis then lived at the Union Workhouse Cuckfield where he died on the 19th March 1897 aged 63 years. He had been a gamekeeper but finished his days as a general labourer for Cuckfield Rural Council. Cuckfield workhouse became Cuckfield Hospital and the 1990/91 was closed and converted into flats.

Some info on Elizabeth Bozier nee Allen ( Emliy's mum ) she was one of eight children born too Joshua & Elizabeth Allen. Joshua married Elizabeth Bray on the 14th May 1826. The family lived at Buckin Inams Farm Wokingham. Her father was a farmer of 3 acres of land and a Bone Crusher. Elizabeth's mother died of consumption when she was 7 and her younger brother was 2. One of her older brothers was called William and another called Joshua.
